North Shore beaches are rockier than the South Shore Beaches

The South Shore of Long Island is bordered by the Great South Bay and the barrier island beaches, like Jones Beach and Robert Moses, lead out into the Atlantic Ocean. These beaches are perfect for surfing due to the large waves.

The north shore beaches, bordered by the Long Island Sound are much rockier.
