Gilgo Beach, Long Island

Gilgo Beach, Long Island and West Gilgo Beach are located in the town of Babylon in Suffolk County, NY. It is considered by the census as part of Gilgo-Oak Beach-Captree - a census designated area. As of the 2000 census the total population was 333.

The beach area is beautiful and scenic and popular for boating and fishing. Fishing is especially popular in the fall with the abundant stripe bass fish on Gilgo Beach. Long Island, south shore has many other beaches:

  • Atlantic Beach
  • Fire Island
  • Jones Beach
  • Lido Beach
  • Long Beach
  • Robert Moses
  • Smith Point
  • Tobay Beach

Most of the people that reside on Gilgo beach, have summer homes.

Gilgo beach is located on Jones Beach Island, which runs parallel to Long Island's southern coast. It is part of Gilgo State park on the south shore of Long Island. The park is beautiful, yet underdeveloped - you can only get to the beach with a 4 wheel drive and you need a NYS Parks Beach Vehicle Access Permit.

No pets allowed on this beach.

To get to the beach from the north shore:

Take the sunken meadow parkway south to the sagtikos parkway.
Take the southern state parkway west.
Take exit 40 for the Robert Moses Causeway South.
Merge onto the Robert Moses Causeway.
Exit onto Ocean Parkway going west.
You will then arrive at Gilgo State Park.

If you are heading east from western Long Island or Queens you can:

Take the Southern State parkway East to exit 22South toward Jones Beach.
Merge onto the Meadowbrook State Parkway South and continue onto Ocean Parkway East.
You will come to a traffic circle and continue straight to state on Ocean parkway east.
Make a U-turn and a slight right to go on Ocean Parkway West.
You will arrive at Gilgo State Park.

The park is accessible during the months of April through December, however there are no facilities available - it is considered "carry in/carry out".

West Gilgo Beach Association, located at Ocean Walk West, Gilgo Beach, NY 11702 has grown to approximately 80 houses. The # is (631)785-6191.

West Gilgo Beach has a firehouse located at Ocean Walk, Babylon, NY 11702.

    31 recreational vehicle sites and 12 designated sites for those who prefer to tent
  • Nickerson Beach Campground

    74 recreational vehicle sites and designated area for those who prefer to tent.
